My 360 VR video of Petrin Hill

Petrin Hill

Petrin Hill is a 300-meter-high hill located in the center of the city of Prague and offers one of the most spectacular views of the entire city. It is also home to some of Prague’s most famous attractions, such as Strahov Monastery, Petrin Tower, Kinsky Garden, Funicular and St Lawrence Church.

The hill itself has plenty to offer tourists that come to visit, with its winding paths and lush green gardens providing a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Strahov Monastery

One of the most impressive sites on Petrin Hill is Strahov Monastery. Founded in 1143 by King Vladislav I, this monastery was originally used for prayer and meditation but has since become a popular tourist attraction due to its stunning architecture, beautiful gardens, art exhibitions and well-stocked library.

From here you get great views of the entire Prague castle complex nearby!

Or perhaps take a walk up towards Petrin Tower itself for great views across both Prague Castle and Charles Bridge; at 60m high there are few better spots from which admire such beauty than from here!

Petrin Tower is a historic structure and one of Prague’s most iconic landmarks. Located on the Petrin Hill, it was modeled after Paris’s Eiffel Tower for the 1891 Jubilee Exhibition in celebration of the 500th anniversary of Czechoslovakia’s founding.

The tower is 60 meters high, with 299 steps leading to a viewing platform at the top.

From there you can see down into the city, including Old Town Square in Prague (and I’ve got a video and guide here)

Memorial to the Victims of Communism

Another interesting site on the base of Petrin Hill is the Memorial to the Victims of Communism. It was built in 2002 in order to commemorate those who suffered under oppressive communist rule between 1948 and 1989.

This small memorial features sculptures depicting people who were victims or survivors of communism – an important reminder of this dark part of history.

Kinsky Gardens

Kinsky Garden provides further opportunity for exploration on Petrin Hill with its terraced lawns, sculptures and ponds filled with koi carp. The garden dates back to 18th century when it was redesigned by Count František Kinský as an Italianate Park; it’s now open every day from 7am-8pm during spring/summer months (9am-7pm rest of year).

I could see the gardens through the trees as I ascended on the funicular in my video.

St Lawrence Church

St Lawrence Church sits right at the top of Petrin Hill next door to Petrin Tower so you can’t miss it when exploring up there! Built between 1732-37 this Baroque church stands tall over the hilltop offering visitors panoramic views over Prague below.

Inside and outside views of the church are in my video.

That’s me with my Insta360 camera that I used to film the 360 video below, standing on Petrin Hill in front of the mirror maze.

Mirror Maze

For visitors seeking unique experiences, Mirror Maze near Petrin Tower offers visitors an exciting challenge full of illusions and surprises. The maze itself consists of various shapes made from mirrors that twist and turn into each other; each path leading you ever deeper into what seems like an endless labyrinth!

Hunger Wall on Petrin Hill

The Hunger Wall in Prague’s Petrin Hill is a reminder of the city’s troubled past. The wall, also called the Hunger Wall or Hladovka in Czech, was built in 1630 during the Thirty Years’ War to provide work and food for those who were suffering from famine and poverty.

It was originally made of wood but later renovated with stone blocks. The wall is approximately 1,600 meters long and stands 6 meters high. It is one of the longest surviving fortifications in Prague.

In my 360 video you can see it behind me stretching across the back of the Petrin Hill Park.

How to get to top of Petrin Hill – Funicular

Petrin Hill, situated in the Lesser Town of Prague, is best accessible by cable car. To reach the lower part of this transport system—the “Újezd” station—simply hop on streetcar lines 9, 12, 15, 20 or 22.

Once you’ve reached your destination at the summit of Petrin Hill you can explore its lush park surroundings and even visit 240 meters north to view from atop Petrin Lookout Tower!

If you prefer a more active mode of transportation, there’s also always an option to climb up the hill on foot for some exercise too. 😉

The Funicular near Ujezd station is a popular attraction on Petrin Hill which allows visitors to take a scenic ride up or down the hill without having to climb all 300 meters!

When I went, I was able to use my “day pass” for public transportation in Prague to use the funicular at no additional cost..

The journey takes only 4 minutes each way and offers spectacular views along its route (as you can see from my picture above)– definitely something not be missed if you’re visiting Prague!

With so much to explore at Petrin Hill, it’s easy to see why this area is such a popular tourist attraction in Prague. Whether you’re interested in history and architecture or simply looking for some fun outdoor activities – there’s something here for everyone! So don’t forget to add Petrin Hill to your list when planning your next visit to Prague – you won’t regret it!

At the end of our walk before leaving Petrin Hill, I took this picture below from behind Strahov Monastery. Amazing view of Prague!
