Is VR worth it? 5 topics to explore
Virtual Reality (VR) technology is an exciting and rapidly advancing field of computing. It has the potential to revolutionize how we interact with data, content, and information.
Even so, many people are still uncertain about whether investing in VR is worth it. From the cost of hardware to its limited current uses, this article will explore whether or not VR is a good investment for the average consumer.
I’ll give my vote about whether VR is worth it and why at the bottom.
In this article, I will explore the following topics:
1. The Potential Benefits of VR Technology
2. Hardware and Software Costs
3. Current Limitations of VR Systems
4. VR vs AR
5. Who is spending money on VR
6. 360 VR travel – how I use VR
1. The Potential Benefits of VR Technology
Virtual Reality (VR) technology has the potential to revolutionize our experiences in a variety of ways. With modern VR systems, users can immerse themselves in virtual worlds and visit locations and scenarios that would otherwise be impossible or cost-prohibitive.
It is also a powerful tool for understanding complex data, as it allows users to quickly switch between perspectives and better visualize their findings.
And of course remote presence is a reality now too! With the rise of virtual reality, it’s easier than ever to be connected to your work or friends from anywhere. Including remote VR teaching and conferences, bringing people together around the world.
Many experts believe that these are just some of the many possibilities that VR technology has to offer.
2. Hardware and Software Costs
When it comes to the cost of VR hardware and software, there is a wide range of choices available. On the low end are entry-level options like smartphone-based headsets which can provide basic virtual experiences, while at the higher end are premium systems with more advanced features like haptic feedback and motion tracking.
Additionally, there are many different types of software packages available for purchase, as well as free apps offered by both hardware developers and third-party creators. In general, the cost of VR technology does vary depending on how much users wish to invest in their experience.
Personally, I have the Oculus Quest 2, and had originally bought the Oculus Rift on launch.
Meta Quest Pro is a big upgrade to current mainstream VR headsets but clocks in at $999 MRSP! But it does have many nice upgrades, including lenses and controllers and smaller size.
The Meta Quest 3 should be coming out this year with a boost in quality at a reasonable price.
3. Current Limitations of VR Systems
While VR technology has the potential to revolutionize how we experience the world around us, it comes with certain limitations. For example, they don’t work as well in dark areas due to inability to track well.
Many headsets are bulky and uncomfortable for long-term use, and may not provide as immersive an experience as hoped for.
Furthermore, many PC-based systems require powerful hardware and specialized software in order to run properly. Lastly, while some packages may be affordable on the surface, there are often hidden costs associated with VR technology such as required accessories.
4. VR vs AR
The main difference between virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) is that while VR replicates an environment or experience, AR modifies the user’s real-world environment by adding digital components into it. Some of the most popular uses for VR include gaming, training simulations, and therapeutic applications.
On the other hand, AR is increasingly being employed to enhance consumer experiences with applications such as navigation systems and product visualization. Both technologies can offer a unique immersive experience, but it ultimately comes down to the type of experience desired as to which one should be chosen.
Ultimately, whether VR or AR is worth it or not depends on the user’s needs and budget. While current VR systems have certain limitations, they are still capable of providing an immersive virtual experience that can take users to places unimaginable.
From exploring distant lands to learning new skills, there is no denying the potential that VR technology holds for redefining entertainment and educational opportunities. With its ever-growing capabilities and expanding library of applications, investing in a VR system may be well worth it for those looking to explore a world beyond our own.
5. Who is spending money on VR?
Basically, the biggest companies in the world.
Meta is banking the whole company on this and is spending billions of dollars.
It currently sells the bestselling VR headset the Meta Quest 2.
Even Apple, Microsoft, and Google are spending billions as well as “side projects” so there is a lot of investment and effort going into this field.
In fact, Apple AR headset is expected to be announced soon, and could make AR/VR more mainstream.
No one wants to be left behind for potentially the next big platform.
So at least for now there will be a lot of advancement of the technology in the near future.
6. 360 VR travel – how I use VR
My main reason for starting this blog and 360 VR Youtube channel was to post my 360 VR videos.
I shot the 360 degree virtual reality videos using my Insta360 X3 camera in the picture above. This article gives more info on the Insta360 X3 as a travel cam.
Its a great way to travel and see the world before you go for real, and I talk about that in more depth in the linked article.
Here is an example of one of my videos in 360 VR during my travels.

Getting in on the ground floor could be a smart idea.
So yes, it is worth it! To me 🙂
In fact, the whole other section of my blog is dedicated to virtual reality travel with 360 VR videos that can be viewed in 360 VR headsets, and well as mobile and desktop.
